Posing in his sumptuous Irish House of Lords robes is an oil-on-canvas portrait of Charles Este (1696-1745), London-born and Oxford-educated, Anglican Bishop of Waterford and Lismore.
His letter asking the Archbishop of Cashel for permission to build a new Palace to the design of Richard Castle, ‘the present one being ruinous’, is also on display.
Este married a Carrickmacross woman Susanna Dobbs and they had one son who predeceased the bishop.
Bishop Este sat for his portrait to the leading French portraitist of the time, Jean Baptiste van Loo. This may well be that portrait which Este in his will left to Waterford Corporation.
