Newly elected Mayor of Waterford City and County, Councillor John Cummins places on display the oldest surviving signed and sealed document, dating from 1483, by a mayor of Waterford – James Rice, eleven times Mayor of Waterford.

It confirms in 1483 that John Aylward was the owner of land granted to his ancestor in about 1290. The red wax seal is the oldest surviving seal of the city of Waterford, showing three lions passant, part of the arms of the kings of England.

The document is displayed in Mayor Rice’s Wine Vault which he gifted to his friend John Collyn Dean of Christ Church Cathedral on 6th July 1468. The document has been loaned by an extremely generous anonymous lender.
