Bishop Charles Este was the Church of Ireland Bishop of Waterford and Lismore from 1745-50. It was Este who commissioned the present Bishop’s Palace in 1743. However he never lived here and died before it was completed. He had engaged Richard Castle the most famous architect in Ireland at the time to design the building. However Castle never finished the job – much to Este’s annoyance – and it was the Waterford architect John Roberts who completed the building.
